Baked Apples Recipe

Baked Apples Recipe with Cooking Apple, Brown Sugar, Butter and Water

INGREDIENTS

1 Large Cooking Apple per Person
Brown Sugar
Butter
Water

METHOD

Heat the oven Mark 5 or 400F or 200C. Have ready a baking dish large enough to hold the apples. Wash the apples, remove the cores with a potato peeler or apple corer. With a sharp knife, slit the skin all around the apple, just above the middle. Stand the apples in the dish, fill the centre with brown sugar and top with a nut of butter. Put a little water in the dish and bake for approximately 40-45 minutes - depending on the size of the apples. Test with a knife to make sure the centre of the apple is cooked.

NB: Variations can be made to this basic recipe by filling the centre of the apple with sultanas and brown sugar, mincemeat, chopped dates, marmalade, raisins and honey, chopped nuts and golden syrup or by adding a clove to the sugar.

Based on the Baked Apples Recipe in:
The Book of Sweets & Puddings
by Myrtle Lindlaw (Spectator Publications 1967).
